How Can Fiber Help You Lose Weight?

by Kate on February 9, 2010

Fiber really is an amazing food. We can’t digest it and it provides absolutely no nutritional value. But yet it’s incredibly good for us and just about any diet or weight program will recommend that you include more fiber in your diet. So how does this super food help you lose weight?

The first way that fiber helps you to lose weight is because it moves everything through the digestive process so much faster. Along with all the other food we’ve consumed that’s being pushed through the system, fat is too. Not only does this get rid of fat faster, but it also helps keep the body from absorbing it! And, even though it speeds up digestion, fiber itself actually stays in the system for quite awhile. This is because it is made up of that stringy substance that is impossible to digest. And because it stays in our systems for so long, we feel fuller for much longer and this will help anyone lose weight!

Fiber also works as a binder to carcinogens in the intestine, which helps reduce the risk of cancer. And, it can also lower cholesterol levels, which is a great way to help prevent heart disease.

Introducing fiber into your diet can definitely help you lose weight. However, it’s important to remember that if you’re introducing fiber, to do it slowly. Too much fiber can clog up the digestive system and stop some of the bodily functions from working properly. Start by introducing a fiber or two, and then move towards changing your entire diet to one that is very fiber-friendly!
